Design of high-tech curtain walling

The continuous façade (or curtain wall) is a type of continuous flexible casing, serves to ensure the usual functions of an outer wall.

The actions to which it is subjected are usually their own weight and wind pressure.

Generally, the curtain is formed by a structure composed of a grid carrier of mullions and transoms consist of extruded aluminium alloy, on which are applied plugging elements in glass or other materials (stone, ceramic, etc. ...). Externally, the profiles are generally applied with a pressure plate and a cover in order to fix the glass.

The installation is normally done from the outside.

The loads of the curtain wall are transferred to the supporting structure by means of links to the pillars of the building or to the slabs.

This curtain wall is designed to resist to their own weight as well as to seismic forces (when present) to the forces of wind and water and air infiltration.

Some features of the system:

- Drainage: channels for conveying external water leaks and condensation;

- Vents: opening part can be integrated;

- Thermal insulation: is interposed a spacer rigid insulating material between the mullion and transoms external and profile of the externalpressure plate to interrupt the thermal bridge between the external frames and the internal structural part. The elastomer gasket system is considered beneficial insulation.

The structural glass curtain walls are an important technological innovation in construction. The structural facades give great value and beauty to the buildings.

The roof enclosure can be designed in a regular, oblique and curved shape. The new architectural trend requires high performance in term of thermal, acoustic and watertight.

The glass enclosure promote the entry of natural light and solar radiation allowing less use of energy, heating and ventilation.

For the control of solar radiation in the envelopes are used the following glass types:

- Absorbingglass;

- Reflectiveglass;

- Selectiveglass.

The glass is treated to withstand the stresses to which it is subjected and may have different characteristics:

- Double glazing;

- Float glass;

- Tempered glass;

- Strengthened glass;

- Laminated safety glass (PVB or as SGP interlayer);

- Thermo-chromic glass;

- Low-emissivity glass;

- Crystal;

- Reflectiveglass.

The bolted point facades or planar and the roofs are solutions used for architectural beauty and brightness of the glass. The fixings are made via spider and stainless steel rotulle installed in facade and roof.

The shelters are made of glass with various materials (galvanized steel shelters, canopies of stainless steel or aluminium canopies). In some applications, where transparency plays a primary role, the supporting structures are made of structural glass elements. Often, to obtain a structure as possible lean, ropes or steel rods used as tiecan be used.

The steel facades are distinguished by lightness, strength, safety and excellent thermal-acoustic performance.

The ventilated façade or ventilated walls, exterior walls with a skin consisting of multiple layers placed in order on each other. The ventilated curtain walls provide significant advantages in terms of energy savings.
